Ralph Cornell

Ralph "Papie" Cornell, 70, of Geneva, Ohio, died April 22, 2000, at his home.
He was born on August 13, 1929, in Marlinton, the son of Lovie Mace, of Elkins, and the late Norman Cornell.
Mr. Cornell was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a truck driver. He retired in 1991 from Reese Trucking in Geneva and previously worked for Diamond Shamrock/Eaton Corp.
In addition to his mother, survivors include two sons, Terry Pool, of Geneva, and Rusty Cornell, of Madison, Ohio; three daughters, Linda Miller and Laura Arnold, both of Ft. Myers, Ohio, and Debbie Bowling, of Geneva; two sisters, Dorothy Lanham and Faye Davis, both of Elkins; 26 grandchildren, and 18 great- grand- children.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, in 1997, and a son Andrew Cornell.
Funeral services were held on April 25 at the Kennedy-Billman Funeral Home in Geneva with the Rev. Charles Oplinger officiating. Burial was in the Perry Township Cemetery.

Anna Mary Gum

Anna Mary Gum, age 92, of Dunmore, died Friday, May 26, 2000, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown after a long illness.
Mrs. Gum was a homemaker and a member of the Dunmore United Methodist Church.
She was born September 9, 1907, at Dunmore, the daughter of Sam and Icie Sharp Ray.
Her husband, Wardell Clark Gum, a son, Wardell Chad Gum, a brother, Vernon Ray, and a sister, Mabel Vandevender, are deceased.
Surviving her are a son, Paul R. Gum, of Dunmore; a daughter, Mary Gatha Galford, of Staunton, Virginia; a sister, Ruby Reynolds, of Marlinton; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. David Rittenhouse, with burial in the Dunmore Cemetery.

Myrtle Lucille Helms

Myrtle Lucille Barrett Beverage Helms, age 78, of Buckeye, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at Augusta Medical Center at Fishersville, Virginia.
She was a member of First Baptist Church at Huntersville.
Born February 26, 1922, at Hamlin, she was the daughter of the late Glasco B. and Lena Roberts Barrett.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her two husbands, Cecil A. Beverage and William Helms, and a sister, Mildred Wilfong.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary F. Quick, of Staunton, Virginia; a son, James A. Beverage; two sisters, Kathleen Curry, of Hamlin, and Doris DeJarnett, of Barboursville; a brother, Glasco Barrett, Jr., of Hamlin; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services were held at VanReenen Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday afternoon by the Rev. Forrest Curry. Burial was in Mountain View Cemetery.

Vernon C. Dean

Vernon C. Dean, age 86, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Plateau Area Medical Center at Oak Hill.
Visitation will be at the Beaver Creek Chapel on Thursday from 6 to 9 p. m.
Services will be at 11 a. m. on Friday at the Beaver Creek Chapel.
Burial will follow in the Beaver Creek Cemetery.

James Harry Shiffler

James "Tub" Shiffler, age 77, died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Virginia.
Mr. Shiffler, son of the late George E. Shiffler, I, and Mrs. Lillian Overholt Shiffler, is survived by his wife, Velma Campbell Shiffler; three children, Marguerite Shiffler and George R. Shiffler, of Fredericksburg, and Elisabeth Ann Allaire, of Leesburg, Virginia; and two sisters, Marguerite Heid, of Annapolis, Maryland, and Madge Bledsoe, of Bartow.
He retired after forty-three years of service with Leggetts Department Store. He was a member of the Methodist Church, J-C's, American Legion, Rotary and Lions Clubs; he worked with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts.
Jim ("Tub") graduated from Marlinton High School in 1941 and is well known in Pocahontas County.
Funeral services were held at 11 a. m Monday, May 22, at Found and Sons Funeral Home, Fredericksburg, with Rev. Jay E. Luther officiating, followed by burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.

Shannan McElwee

Word was received of the death of Shannan McElwee, age 42, on Saturday, May 27, 2000, at Orlando, Florida, after a long illness with cancer.
He was the son of Robert and Alice McElwee, of Route 1, Marlinton.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife, Linda, and one son, Shannan; a brother, Michael McElwee, and a sister, Connie Wilkes.
A memorial service was scheduled for Wednesday.
