Annie I. Varner

Annie I. Varner, age 83, of Marlinton, died Tuesday, April 23, 2002, at Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins.
Mrs. Varner was born April 23, 1919, in Tucker County, the daughter of the late Clinton and Callie J. Rexrode.
She was married to Mack Hardy Varner, who died on January 19, 1998.
Graveside services were held Friday morning by the Rev. David Rittenhouse in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Robert S. Gay

Robert S. Gay, age 90, of Rt. 1, Marlinton (Edray), died Thursday, April 25, 2002, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Gay was a lifelong resident of Pocahontas County. He was a retired farmer, a member of Pocahontas County Farm Bureau, and a member of the Edray United Methodist Church.
Born at Edray August 13, 1911, he was the son of the late Alvin R. and Flora Elizabeth Moore Gay.
His wife, Mabel Duncan Gay, died October 10, 1992. Also preceding him in death were five sisters, Oleta Gay, Mary Ruth Gay, Virginia Gay Mason, Helen Gay, and Elizabeth Gay Sharp.
Surviving him are a daughter, Nancy Steele, of Alexandria, Virginia; two sons, William A. Gay, of Marlinton, and Benjamin D. Gay, of Princeton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday at VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. Robert Mann, with burial in the Edray Cemetery.

Marcus L. Davis

Marcus Lew Davis, age 21, of Valley Head, died Wednesday, April 24, 2002, at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
He was born June 23, 1980, in Elkins, a son of G. Franklin T. Davis and Vickey Jones Fisher, who survive in Pfafftown, North Carolina.
He made his home with his grandparents, James M. and Judith L. Tumblin Jones, of Valley Head, and was employed at Snowshoe as a switchboard operator. He attended school in Tygarts Valley and Pocahontas County High School.
He was a Protestant by faith.
A memorial service was held Monday in Valley Head at the home of his grandparents by the Rev. Elizabeth Baker, pastor of the Brookhaven United Methodist Church in Morgantown, with interment in Mingo Cemetery.

Martha Rein Jones

Martha Rein Jones, age 80, of Dunmore, died Sunday, April 28, 2002, at her home in Dunmore.
Mrs. Jones was the owner and operator of The Dairy Bar near Cass.
She was born January 9, 1922, in Michigan, the daughter of the late Andrew and Emilia Koukkari Rein.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene Jones.
Survivors include two sons, Teddy Halterman, of Marlinton, and Ernie Halterman, of Richmond, Virginia, and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesay afternoon at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. David Rittenhouse, with burial in the Dunmore Cemetery.

Merriel T. Peacock

Merriel Thomas Peacock, age 85, of Crescent City, Florida, died April 25, 2002, from injuries he received in an automobile accident in Travares, Florida.
Born in Chauncey, Georgia, he was raised and attended school in Crescent City. He owned and operated a furniture store in Marlinton. Following his retirement, he returned to Crescent City from Marlinton 27 years ago. He enjoyed fishing and beekeeping and locally he was known as the "Bee Man." He was a member of the Marlinton Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rites in Palatka. He was also a member of the First Baptist Church in Crescent City.
Preceding him in death were two brothers, Mangin and Edward Peacock.
Mr. Peacock is survived by his wife of 54 years, Mary; daughters, Karen Linzalone and Teresa Brewster, both of Elkins, and Mary Ellen Morbito; three sons, David Peacock and Ronald Peacock, both of Marlinton, and Merriel T. Peacock, Jr.; brothers, Clarence Peacock, of Crescent City, Florida, and Leslie Peacock, of St. Augustine, Florida; nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Crescent City by Dr. William L. Pope.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m Thursday in Mountain View Cemetery in Marlinton with Masonic rites.
Visitation will be at VanReenen Funeral Home Wednesday night from 6 to 9 p.m.

Ariana Owen Browning

Ariana Owen Browning, age 23, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, formerly of Hillsboro, died April 25, 2002.
Ariana was a 1997 graduate of Verde Valley School in Sedona, Arizona. Following graduation she travelled extensively in New Zealand with Willing Workers on Organic Farms and independently in Sumatra, Indonesia. In 1999 she completed training as an instructor in Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language. Ariana had also attended Greenbrier Community College and Colorado Mountain College.
Surviving her are her parents, William and Patricia Browning, brother, William Browning, III, and sister, Elizabeth Browning, all of Hillsboro.
Graveside services will be held at the Oak Grove Cemetery at 2 p. m. on Saturday, May 11.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pocahontas County Humane Society, P.O. Box 8, Hillsboro, WV 24946.

Joseph Richard Steffl

Joseph Richard Steffl, age 30, of Bowden, died Sunday afternoon, April 28, 2002, as a result of a kayaking accident near Bemis.
He was born October 20, 1971, at Wooster, Ohio, a son of Richard Steffl and Shirley Flick Steffl, who survive at Point Pleasant, Ohio.
On December 20, 1999, he was married to the former Robin Dadisman, who survives.
Also surviving are two sisters, Julie Steffl, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Melissa Walther, of Stefenc, Bermuda; grandmother, Wilma Steffl, of Point Pleasant, Ohio; two stepsons, Cody and Sam Wagner, of Moatsville.
He was an outstanding football and baseball player during his middle school years, was a graduate of Bellaire Saint John High School at Bellaire, Ohio, attended West Liberty State College, and received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Science at Alderson-Broaddus College in 1998. He was employed as a Physician's Assistant for Mason Todd Corder, D.O., from May, 1998, to April, 2000, and was a former employee of the Broaddus Hospital at Philippi. He was serving as Physician's Assistant and Acting Administrator of the Northern Pocahontas County Health Clinic at Durbin at the time of his death. He also worked at the Tri County Health Center at Rock Cave, and was an Emergency Medical Technician, being affiliated with the Bartow-Frank-Durbin Rescue Squad at Durbin, and was a member of the Pocahontas County Search and Rescue Team. He was a member of the American Academy of Physician's Assistants, the National Academy of Physician's Assistants, and the West Virginia Primary Care Association. He was a Catholic.
Funeral service was held at the Lohr & Barb Funeral Home in Elkins Wednesday afternoon by Pastor R. D. Ice. Mr. Steffl was then moved to the Borkoski Funeral Home at Adena, Ohio, where friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening. Final rites will be conducted at the funeral home chapel at 11 a.m. Friday by Monsignor John C. Kolesar.
Interment will follow those services at the Pitman Cemetery at Philippi.

Violet Morgan, of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at VanReenen Funeral Home
Funeral services will be held at 1 o'clock Saturday by the Rev. Phyllis Cox at VanReenen Funeral Home. Burial will be at Emmanuel Cemetery.

Hugh C. Hill

Hugh C. Hill, age 93, of Jacox, died Tuesday, April 30, 2002, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. He had been a resident at Pocahontas Center.
Mr. Hill was a retired farmer, a member of the Pocahontas Farm Bureau, and was a member of the United Methodist Church.
The son of the late Joseph Wilson Hill and Lizzie Boggs Hill, he was born at Jacox November 8, 1908.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ina C. Hill, a daughter, Wanda Hill, and two brothers, Herbert Hill and Marshall Hill.
Surviving him are a daughter, Dottie Eckert, of Boulder, Colorado; a brother, Johnnie B. Hill, of Jacox; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 1 o'clock at VanReenen Funeral Home by the Rev. Phyllis Cox. Burial will be in the Kellison Cemetery at Jacox.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 Thursday night at VanReenen Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be given to Pocahontas Center.

Doris Ruth Isner, 84, of Kerens, died on Tuesday, April 30, 2002.
Friends will be received at the Lohr and Barb Funeral Home in Elkins on Friday from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral service will be held on Saturday at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Janet Sheets Fisher

Janet Sheets Fisher, age 82, of Guys Mills, Pennsylvania, died April 7, 2002.
Her first husband was Layke Sheets, who was born at Green Bank and later moved to Pennsylvania.
She is survived by her present husband, Kenneth L. Fisher; son, Daryl Layke Sheets; two daughters, Nancy Burchard and Sue Ellen Felix; and two step-sons, Donald and Craig Fisher; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held in Sharon, Pennsylvania, with burial at Townville, Pennsylvania.
