Mary Wotring Shafer
Mary Wotring Shafer, age 90, of Rt. 1, Marlinton, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.
A native of Morgantown, she was born August 1, 1913, the daughter of the late Daniel Jefferson Wotring and Madge Cloay Mundell Wotring.
She attended college for two years and came to Pocahontas County as the bride of the late Walter Fredrick Shafer. Mr. Shafer, a son, Fred, a sister, Eleanor Wotring, and five brothers, Earnest, Daniel, James, William, and Donald Wotring, preceded her in death.
Mrs. Shafer was the owner and operator of The Pines Restaurant. She was a member of the Marlinton Presbyterian Church, a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Edray Farm Women, Marlinton Woman's Club, Business and Professional Women's Club, and Pocahontas Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.
She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Ann Carter, of Chesapeake, Ohio, and Mary Lee Roy, of Marlinton; five sons, Philip Shafer, Tom Shafer, Bill Shafer, and Jack Shafer, all of Marlinton, and Joe Shafer, of Harrisonburg, Virginia; a sister, Barbara Ann Warsinsky, of Morgantown; 23 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at the Marlinton Presbyterian Church at 3:00 Thursday afternoon by the Rev. Greg Moore, with burial at Mountain View Cemetery.

Daisy N. Hayslett
Daisy N. Hayslett, age 90, of Rt. 1, Marlinton, died Monday, July 19, 2004, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.
The daughter of the late Ligon and Bessie Jackson Mace, she was born on Elk Mountain November 23, 1913.
Her husband, John Hayslett, preceded her in death. Others preceding her in death were her parents, three sisters, Susie Ramsey, Goldie Armstrong, and Brownie Mace, and five brothers, Willie Mace, Luther Mace, Clyde Mace, George Mace, and John Mace.
Surviving her are three sons, Robert C. Mace and Kenneth Mace, both of Newport News, Virginia, and Johnny Hayslett, of Marlinton; four sisters, Annie Bowers, of Marlinton, Betty Armstrong, of Buckeye, Mary Grace Hanna, of Alderson, and Evelyn Turner, of Stony Bottom; and three brothers, Julian Mace and Dale Mace, both of Durbin, and Lewis Mace, of Ridgeley.
Funeral services will be held at 12 noon Thursday at VanReenen Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Betty Shields, with burial in Mountain View Cemetery.

Ronnie McMullen
Ronnie McMullen, age 69, of Hot Springs, Virginia, died after a battle with cancer on July 15, 2004.
Mr. McMullen was born November 25, 1934, in Bath County, the son of the late Charles Franklin and Edith Accord McMullen.
Mr. McMullen was retired from The Homestead after 40 years of service. He was a member of the Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church, Warm Springs Masonic Lodge No. 265, a past member of the Bath County School Board, a charter member of the Bath County Cancer Support Group, and worked with Relay for Life.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Carolyn Burns McMullen, of Hot Springs; children, Mike McMullen, of Frost, and Julie Dean, of Hot Springs; three brothers, Clarence F. McMullen and Arthur McMullen, both of Hot Springs, and Conley A. McMullen, of Vinton, Virginia; a sister, Estaline Bower, of Hot Springs; four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Madie G. McMullen.
At Mr. McMullen's request, his remains were cremated.
A memorial service was conducted Sunday afternoon at the Virginia Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Debbie Carey and the Rev. Tom Stanley.

Ora Belle Sharp
Ora Belle Thompson Sharp, age 100, of Marlinton, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Pocahontas Memorial Hospital.
Ora was a homemaker and mother, a member of the Central Union United Methodist Church and the Pocahontas County Historical Society.
She was born at Buckeye on July 24, 1903, the daughter of the late David Jackson and Martha Elizabeth Rose Thompson.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Charles Jack Sharp, a son, Jack Arnold Sharp, four brothers and three sisters preceded her in death.
Surviving her are five daughters, Catherine Elizabeth Baechtel, of Derwood, Maryland, Patricia Wenona Lamoureux, of Rural Retreat, Virginia, Brenda Carol Doss and Glenda Charlotte Slagle, both of Marlinton, Louise Kay Burke, of Millboro, Virginia; eight sons, Earl Milburn Sharp, of 0Roanoke, Virginia, Lew Warrick Sharp, of South Point, Ohio, Dempsey Thompson Sharp, of Nelsonville, Ohio, Charles Herbert Sharp, of Salt Lake City, Utah, Craig Arthur Sharp, of Chester, Virginia, Donald James Sharp, of Berkeley Springs, Tommy David Sharp, of Marlinton, Leslie Douglas Sharp, of Petersburg; fifty grandchildren, 87 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren, for a total of 177 direct descendants.
Revs. Betty Shields and Robert Shields will hold funeral services Friday at 1 p.m., at the Central Union United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Sharp Cemetery on Jerico Road.
Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m. at VanReenen Funeral Home.

Mary Jo Mayes
Mary Jo Mayes, age 75. of Cass, died Saturday, July 17. 2004, at Thomas Memorial Hospital in Charleston.
Mrs. Mayes was born September 4, 1928, at Cass to the late Caleb and Olive Teter White and was a lifelong resident of Pocahontas County.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leroy White, of Green Bank; sister, Lillian Wooddell, of Green Bank, and a son, Jimmy Mayes.
Mrs. Mayes is survived by her husband of 54 years, Clifford Guy Mayes, of Cass; daughter, Renalda Duncan, of South Charleston; brother, Jim White, of Cass; two granddaughters and one great-grandson.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Wallace and Wallace Funeral Home in Arbovale by the Rev. Toney Samons, with burial in the Arbovale Cemetery.

Virginia L. Hevener
Virginia L. Hevener, age 78, of Huntington, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati, Ohio.
She was a graduate of Green Bank High School and attended Marshall University. She was a retired bookkeeper for Rivers Cities Brokerage. She was a member of Spring Valley Presbyterian Church.
Born at Dunmore April 23, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John U. and Mabel Mary Hylbert Hevener. Also preceding her in death were a brother, John W. Hevener, and special friend, Dale Fitzwater.
Surviving are a niece and nephew, Anne E. Hevener, of Cincinnati, and John M. Hevener, of Columbus, Ohio
Services were held Monday at the Spring Valley Presbyterian Church by the Rev. David Richards, with burial following at Arbovale Cemetery by the Rev. Doyle Kester.

Helena Ann McComb
Helena Ann McComb, age 60, of New Albany, Ohio, died suddenly and unexpectedly Friday, July 16, 2004.
She was past president of LaSertoma International, Grove City Chapter, former board member American Cancer Society, Columbus Chapter, former chair Babe Zaharias Executive Classic, and founding chair, Grove City Arts in the Alley, former member Sweet Adelines, Columbus Chapter, and former 4-H member and fundraiser. She was a golfer, gardener, and choir member, and was a member of the New Albany Presbyterian Church and Vanderbilt Presbyterian Church, Naples, Florida.
Mrs. McComb was preceded in death by her parents, William Jones Taylor and Hazel Young Taylor.
Surviving her are her husband of 41 years, Tiney M. McComb; daughter, Camilla L. McComb Seaton; son, G. Scott McComb; five grandchildren; brother, James Taylor; stepmother, Madeline Taylor.
Funeral services were held Tuesday morning at Worthington Presbyterian Church, Worthington, Ohio, by the Rev. David Milroy, with private family inurnment.
