The Honorable Judge Charles M. Lobban

The Honorable Judge Charles M. Lobban, age 80, of Alderson, died Monday, May 23, 2011, at his home.

Born July 9, 1930, at Hinton, he was a son of the late Floyd G. Lobban, II and Marion Nelson Lobban.

Judge Lobban attended Alderson Schools and Greenbrier Military School in Lewisburg. He graduated with a degree in Commerce and later earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having served his country in Korea and during the Korean Conflict.

He practiced law in Charlottesville for one year and then returned to his hometown of Alderson to run his family's furniture store, F. G. Lobban Furniture Company, and practice law. He served the Town of Alderson as its volunteer attorney. He then joined the Fred Sawyer law practice in Hinton where one of his projects was to do the law work to obtain Pipestem State Park. Later he joined the Haynes and Ford Law Firm in Lewisburg.

He was elected Circuit Court Judge for the 11th Judicial Circuit which consisted of four counties at the time: Greenbrier, Monroe, Summers and Pocahontas. He remained in the job as judge for 20 years. Following retirement, he served as Senior Status Judge where he mediated cases.

Judge Lobban was a member and elder of the Alderson Presbyterian Church, a member of Tri-County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson, a member of the Alderson Masonic Lodge No. 70 AF & AM and was a 65-year member of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department in which he was awarded life membership. He was a former longtime chariman of the Monroe County Democratic Executive Committee and was a former Greenbrier County Democrat of the Year. He was a pioneerand passionate member of the Alderson 4th of July Committee for more than three decades.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Floyd G. Lobban, III; and a sister, Isabel Lobban Mann.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie McVey Lobban; two daughters, Lizabeth Rogers, and husband, Jeff, of Alderson, and Lori Anderson, and husband, Brian, of Houston, Texas; two sons, Charles M. Lobban, Jr., of Alderson, and Dr. John H. Lobban, and wife, Krista, of Morgantown; 12 grandchildren, Josua Roger, and wife, Becky, Dr. Jillian Rogers, Jo Ellen Rogers, Karlee Lobban, Kendra Lobban, Kasey Lobban and Kara Lobban, all of Morgantown, Dr. Jane Rogers, Jordan Anderson, Mallori Anderson, Levi Anderson and Alee Anderson, all of Houston, Texas; one great-great-grandson, Zackary Rogers, of Morgantown; and many nieces and nephews.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, May 25, 5 - 10 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson. Funeral service is Thursday, May 26, 2 p.m. at the Alderson Presbyterian Church with Rev. Lanny Howe officiating. Interment will be in the Alderson Cemetery.
