Lena F. Bonner

Lena F. Bonner, age 109years and 354 days, of Mountain Grove, Virginia, died Monday, July 4, 2011, at Pocahontas Center in Marlinton.

Born July 15, 1901, in Pocahontas County, she was a daughter of the late Asbury Wise and Lena McChalpin.

Lena moved to Mountain Grove, Virginia, in 1905. She married her husband of 62 years, Burnett C. Bonner, December 20, 1922. The Bonners bought a farm in 1931, and Lena became a housewife. She boarded 28 different school teachers in Mountain Grove over a period of 18 years, having boarded three at a time, and provided three meals per day. She heated the house with six wood stoves that she kept burning. She was a very dedicated member of the Mountain Grove United Methodist Church having served as a Sunday School Teacher, Treasurer, Communion Steward, WSCS President; and she cleaned the church; and kept flowers on the altar. She learned to drive a Model T Ford but gave up driving when the more technical vehicles were invented.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four sisters, Edna Warwick, Ethel Gutshall, Florence Taylor and Mary Puffenbarger Ailstock; and two brothers, Harper Hiner and James Hiner.

She is survived by two foster daughters, Delsie Roberts, and husband, Jerry, of Staunton, Virginia, and Patricia "Patty" Middleton, and husband, Melvin, of Tennessee; a sister, Catherine Kershner, of Mountain Grove, Virginia; two nephews, Darrell Hiner, and wife, Barbara, of Marlinton, and David Kershner, and friend, Joanne, of Mountain Grove, Virginia; and four nieces, Louise Wolfe, of Roanoke, Virginia, Dreama Chestnut, and husband, Franklin, of Hot Springs, Virginia, Donna Wiseman, and husband, Robert, of Gap Mills, and Diane Pritt, and husband, Dana, of Mountain Grove, Virginia.

Funeral service is Thursday, July 7, at 11 a.m. at the Mountain Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Shields officiating and Revs. Betty Shields and Dick Boyer assisting. Interment will be in the Mountain Grove Cemetery.
