Gilbert Junior Sheets, age 84, of Kernersville, North Carolina, died Wednesday, August 24, 2011, at Forsyth Medical Center.

Born April 29, 1927, at Green Bank, he was a son of the late Samuel Gilbert and Ollie Rhodes Edminston Sheets.

Gilbert retired from the United States Navy after many years of service. While he was in the Navy, he traveled all over the world, and lived on Midway Island as well as Puerto Rico.

He always had a kind word for everyone, a joke or a story and a helping hand for all. He frequently returned to West Virginia to visit friends and family. He loved his church; where he also served as elder, and enjoyed the fellowship of working on the egg project.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Blanche Hamed Sheets; two brothers; and two sisters.

He is survived by his daughter, Teresa Ann Sheets, of Kernersville, North Carolina; a sister, Jane Hamed, of Green Bank; a sister-in-law, Bernice Taylor, of Arbovale; a special friend, Arlene Rexrode, of Arbovale; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was August 27 at First Presbyterian Church in Kernersville with Rev. Clark Vincent officiating. Interment with military honors was in Eastlawn Gardens of Memory.
