Weather

James Schaffner, who keeps weather records at Seneca State Forest, tells us the lowest thermometer reading he has had was 11 below last Friday, December 23, with the highest for the month 48 above on December 10. Last Friday was a day of variable reports for slightly warmer air had moved in from the west. Twenty-two to 27 below were reported from the Minnehaha and Rimel areas with about zero on Spruce Flats. To get on with the official records we had 1.1 inches of snow in October, 3.1 inches in November and 13.8 inches in December, making a total of 18 inches, with the weather looking like more snow today. The total precipitation in terms of rain for December was 2.2 inches. It takes about 10 inches of snow to equal an inch of rain.

As to fire season, Mr. Schaffner said we had six forest fires in the county, not burning over two acres in any one fire. Luckily a warden was in the vicinity of each and the fires were extinguished quickly. All but one were caused by hunters.
