Our Boys and Girls in Service

George Edward Friel, of Marlinton, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Friel, of Marlinton, a recent enlistee in the Regular Army, is now stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, for basic training. He has chosen chemical school for his assignment.

 

Completing the 12-week officer course at the Quartermaster’s School at Fort Lee, Virginia, was 2nd Lieutenant Donald C. Mullenax, of Arbovale.

 

He graduated from Green Bank High School in 1955 and from West Virginia University in 1960. He is a member of Alpha Tau Alpha and Theta Sigma Chi fraternities.

 

Stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, with the 501st Infantry is Specialist 4 Orville Swecker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville W. Swecker, of Durbin.

 

A gunner in Company E. He completed basic training at Fort Jackson, North Carolina.

 

The 20-year-old soldier is a 1957 graduate of Tygart Valley High School, at Mill Creek, and was employed at the Frank Leather Tannery.

 

Roy C. Ober, commissaryman seaman, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Oren Ober, of Bartow, is serving aboard the USS Charles R. Ware operating with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean.

 

Ware completed two months of patrol duty in the Red Sea in early September.

 

Gary D. Tallman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Craig Tallman, of Stony Bottom, graduated from recruit training September 24, at the Naval Training Center, at Great Lakes, Illinois.

 

The graduation exercises marking the end of nine weeks of “boot camp,” included a full dress parade and review before military officials and civilian dignitaries.

 

In nine weeks of instruction the “raw recruit” is developed into a Navy Bluejacket, ready for duty with the fleet.

 

Students

Miss Mary Margaret Wooddell of Green Bank, is receiving experience this semester in classroom teaching as a West Virginia Wesleyan College student instructor at the Buckhannon grade school.

 

The Wesleyan senior is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Wooddell, of Green Bank. She is a music major.

 

Miss Wooddell is teaching music to second, third and sixth graders at the Central Grade School. She is working under the guidance of veteran classroom teachers.

 

Carolyn Nottingham, of Dunmore, a sophomore at Marshall College, has been selected as College Hall Counselor.
