Candidate Debate

Politically speaking, I had my natural choices affirmed last week. With much interest I looked forward to seeing the opposing candidates appear together on the nationwide TV “debate” last week. After seeing the program I felt that the Democrats have a man of vision, a capable candidate. Then on Friday on a luncheon program at the meeting of the West Virginia Press Association in Huntington, a panel composed of Jennings Randolph, Governor Underwood, Wally Barron and Harold Neely answered questions put to them by political writers –– reporters. While it can’t be said that many definite answers were received it was a most interesting program, and, Democratically speaking, I thought our candidate for Governor, Wally Barron, showed remarkably well. Civil service program, educational improvements, more and better roads were among things promised by both, and definite tax-programs were not disclosed by either. Barron explained with thoughtful reasoning that he would not advocate any specific tax proposal but would bring together representatives of different segments of our economy and society, big and little, to plan a comprehensive tax program that will fall fairly on all. Randolph and Underwood sparred on different approaches to the distressed area bills, etc., but the candidates for governor drew the most questions and I was agreeably reassured by Barron’s performance.

At the same meeting in Huntington I felt most honored to be named to the Board of Directors at the business meeting Saturday morning. Also I won a wrist watch as a door prize –– one of the few things I’ve ever won in my lifetime. So it was a very successful meeting.

Snakes

John Bell, up from Holden for the opening of hunting season, killed an Eastern Timber Rattler on Buffalo Run in the Alleghenies. This was the largest rattler ever seen by several observers. It measured 50 inches in length, bigger around than a man’s forearm, and had nine rattles and a button.

D. D. Shue reported killing a copperhead on Fancy Gap Mountain in North Carolina at 1:15 a.m. He was hauling lumber at the time. Mr. Shue said it was the first time he had ever seen a snake out at night and he had always heard they didn’t travel after dark. I had never heard that and, after inquiring around have found that others think snakes are active at night, a good hunting time for them.

Vacation Trip

Mr. and Mrs. Argile Arbogast have been enjoying a fun-filled vacation at the El San Juan Intercontinental Hotel, an exotic seaside resort in San Juan, Puerto Rico, as guests of the Western Auto Supply Company.

Mr. Arbogast won the expense-paid trip for excellent merchandising performance by his store in the nation-wide contest, sponsored by Western Auto, the first half of this year.

A highlight of the trip included a tour of El Morro Forest which was built by the Spaniards about 1539. A nine-hole golf course winds through the grounds, and three of the holes are played within the filled-in moats of the fortification. The history of the Island dates back to its discovery by Columbus in 1493.

On a side trip to El Yunque Rain Forest, Mr. and Mrs. Arbogast saw towering fern trees and tiny orchids growing wild. Another trip included a tour of Old San Juan, a seven-square-block section of the city dating back to 1521. Modern San Juan, the Island capital, is a metropolis of about 500,000.
