4-H Club News

Eleven Pocahontas 4-Hers entered State Competition at Jackson’s Mill during the State 4-H Round-Up.

Frances Harper and Margaret Johnson entered the State Style Revue with their garments made in the Complete Costume Project. Frances received a blue ribbon and was named in the top ten in the state and Margaret received a red ribbon.

George Friel, Duane Sharp, James Galford and Jerry Clifton composed the County Land Judging Team, and placed second in the state out of 19 teams entering. George Friel, with a score of 383 out of a possible 400, was high individual scorer in the whole contest and the other three boys received blue ribbons for individual scoring. The winning team, Nicholas County, had a score of 1026 while our team’s score was 1013.

Helen Moore, with her demonstration on “Planting and Caring for Strawberries,” placed first with a blue ribbon in the Vegetable Production Class. She also received $20 from the State Department of Agriculture.

Sondra Nelson and Karen Galford placed first in the Team Bread Demonstration Class with their demonstration titled, “Slick Tricks with a Quick Mix.” They each received a $50 United States  Savings Bond provided by the Standard Brand Inc., New York, New York.

Kay Beard with her demonstration, “How to Make Rolls with a Batter,” received a blue ribbon and Judy Shaw received a red ribbon in the Dairy Foods Division with her demonstration on “How to Make a Cheese Cake.”

4-H Tractor Contest

Duane Sharp, 17, of Edray, placed fifth in the ninth annual State 4-H Tractor Operators’ Contest held at the State 4-H Camp.

The contest included a written examination based on the subject matter of the 4-H Tractor Maintenance Project. The contestants were scored on items of safety throughout the entire competition. In the operation phase of the contest, the entrants showed their driving ability and skill by driving through an obstacle course with a two-wheeled implement, backing down a long alley-way with a close clearance on either side and returning to the starting point. Probably the most difficult feat was backing a four-wheeled wagon into a stall with but six inches clearance on either side.

Kart Races

Labor Day 1960 will be a day to remember for Jody Moses as he was three-time victor in the Go-Kart Races held at the Pocahontas Fairgrounds. Jody earned an overwhelming victory in the Heat Race, Australian Pursuit and Feature Race of the day. William Clendenen was the winner of the other Heat Race, driving Dale Curry’s kart.

Isabelle Michael won pole position by qualifying in 23.5 second and went on to win the “Powderpuff Race” over strong competition. Mrs. Michael and Moses both drove a Dart Kart owned by Dr. John Mallow.
