Pocahontas County Arts Council is up and running with Artapalooza Two
Kicking off a summer of activities for young and old
Artapalooza Two will be held Memorial Day weekend at the Pocahontas County Opera House in Marlinton. The opening event is scheduled for Friday, May 27, all pirate related except the cookie decorating contest. That's just plain yummy fun. The activities will commence at 5 p.m. Friday evening with pirate face painting and removable tattoos. Then it will move on to cardboard sword making and fighting. This year all the treasure maps will be written in invisible ink so all priates will have to figure out how to make visible. There will also be the shortest pirate play in the world. Lightstick fighting and this year we will have a short Pirate dance to cap off the festivities. Adults are welcome to attend in their piratey attire.
The Artapalooza art show will go up Saturday morning and will have some nice exhibits of community activities that produced some fine art by school age and adult students .These examples are from classes made possible by grants from Pocahontas County Arts Council, Snowshoe Foundation and West Virginia Culture and History as well as High Rocks Use Your Noodle program.
The High Rocks Use Your Noodle program will exhibit art from their self-published coloring book, "C is for Community" an alphabet book by Pocahontas County students. Copies of the book will be for sale.
There will also be several areas set up during the art show for visitors to try their hand at painting, drawing majolica painting and slip cast decorations. These are all examples of classes offered year-round in various locations in the county through our funding from the County Commission.
Sunday, along with the art show, we will have a tea tasting featuring teas from Brightside Acres.
The activities will conclude with an eclectic mix of dance music in a tribute to all the men and women who have served our country.
After the Artapalooza, PCAC will announce the Grand Opening of the Durbin Art Center just in time for the summer train season. The Durbin Art Center will feature locally crafted art and products from around the county and region.
Class listing for Durbin, Little Yellow House and Cheryl's Beauty and Beyond will be online June 3 at pocahontasarts.org.
