Additional lodging, 'Big Top,' and terrain park upgrades are just a few

Snowshoe has lots of new features for this ski season

For its 32nd season, Snowshoe Mountain Resort continues to add to the adventures and activities atop West Virginia's highest ski resort. In addition to the opening of two brand new lodging complexes, the Seneca and Expedition Station, Snowshoe Mountain will unveil the "Big Top," a new rental and retail shop, and a new and improved terrain park system.
In an effort to offer guests weatherproof event and activity space, Snowshoe now offers one of the largest single-room meeting and activity venues in the eastern United States. Located adjacent to Shavers Center, this 15,400 square foot "sprung structure" facility will allow Snowshoe Mountain to offer a large space for special events and activities. This winter, the Big Top at Snowshoe Mountain will operate as a family-oriented fun center.
After a long day on the slopes, kids and families will find a plethora of entertainment and activities in the Big Top. The facility will encompass a variety of interactive games, adventure activities and even live entertainment. A large arcade area with more than 75 video games, table games, billiards, and a video café are just some of the elements of the family fun center. Outdoor adventure activities will also be incorporated into the spacious Big Top, as well as a stage and performance area.
"Our goal with this structure was to provide a weatherproof environment for kids, teens and adults alike to enjoy a variety of adventures and fascinating activities," said Snowshoe Mountain's Animation Manager, Missy Turley. "The versatility of this structure allows us to adapt to almost any function, and that is what we are most excited about."
Another change to the landscape will be a new 11,000 square foot rental shop that will soon open in Snowshoe's newest lodging complex, Expedition Station, beside Skidder Slope. Expedition Rentals will be ready to service all skiing needs this winter, with the grand opening scheduled for December.
With more than 3,700 skis, 1,000 snowboards and 5,000 boots, helmets and poles at a single location, visitors to Snowshoe Mountain will have everything they need at their fingertips. Two dozen ski/ board/boot adjustment benches will improve service time and help skiers and riders make it to the slopes even faster this winter. The facility will also include a retail shop fully stocked with goggles, gloves, beanies, face and neck warmers as well as basic ski apparel for all cold weather needs. Lockers will be available for day skiers in this ideal ski in/ski out slope-side location. The shop will also be conveniently located next door to Snowshoe's ski school facilities.
With the growing popularity of snowboarding and terrain parks, Snowshoe Mountain Resort is also adding numerous new and exciting features to its park system for the 05/06 Winter season. The new Spruce Glades Pro Park at Snowshoe and a Super Park at Silver Creek area highlight the major additions.

"Of all our updates and additions, we are most excited about the Super Park at Silver Creek," said Bruce Persinger, Snowshoe Mountain's Terrain Park Manager. "It is a totally new concept, unlike any other resort in our region."
Seven different trails in the Silver Creek area will include numerous features, making up the area's largest terrain park. The Super Park will include a variety of aerial features, rails and boxes dotted across the wide and flat parts of the Timberjack, Mountaineer, Cascade, Fox Chase, Laurel Run, Bear Claw and Buck Saw trails.
In addition to the 400-foot long,12-foot high half pipe, the Silver Creek area will also have a skier/boardercross course. The racecourse, similar to a motocross course, will be located on the Slaymaker and Spur trails and includes gates, berms and rollers in which athletes will race around.
The Spruce Glades Pro Park, located near the top of the Ballhooter lift on Snowshoe Mountain, is a professional-level terrain park that will require guests to first watch a 15-minute safety video in order to acquire an entrance pass. The park will contain numerous features including large tabletops and jumps ranging from 35 to 50 feet in distance.
Both the Snowshoe and Silver Creek areas will once again include terrain gardens. The Spruce Glades Terrain Garden at Snowshoe, a beginner terrain park, will have a few small rails, a fun box and small aerial snow features. Silver Creek's Mountaineer Terrain Garden will be an introduction to riding rails and getting air for the novice.
Most of the rails in the park are box steel, making the park very skier-friendly. With the new setup and expansion of the park to cover more than 10 trails, Snowshoe Mountain hopes to add to your overall winter mountain experience, whether a long-term guest or daily commuting visitor.

At the Sweet Shoppe

Suzi's Sweet Shoppe treats tastebuds

It's certainly a cliché to say a trip to Suzi's Sweet Shoppe will make you feel like a kid in a candy store, but there's really no better description.
The restaurant, which features fun decor and a miniature "Happy Days" juke box, offers some great menu items with some amusing names, sure to produce the "oohs" and "aahs" and giggles of your youth.
Sesame Chicken Salad
The Sesame Chicken Salad is pleasing to the eye and flavorful.

For instance, "In a land far, far away," diners can have a taste of the Orient with Thai Caesar or Sesame Chicken Salads, a little Mexican with Speedy Gonzales or the Crabby Patty with roasted cumin and chipotle remoulade. Okay, New York is in this country, but far away, it is. Suzi pays tribute to Seinfeld with the Big Salad and the Small Salad.
"The Dish ran away with the Spoon" offers sandwiches like Tom the turkey breast with smoked gouda and avocado mayo and the Chicken Little with chili-rubbed chicken and Monterey Jack cheese. In the mood for tuna? Sorry, Charlie. No, you can have it; that's just the name of the sandwich that comes with celery, green onion and lemon parsley mayo. Humpty Dumpty is Suzi's own egg salad and The Count features ham and Swiss, egg-battered, and then grilled and served with raspberry honey mustard. The Third Little Piggie is the roast beef sandwich you've been looking for with Cheese Whiz and peppers and onions by request.
They also have a daily blue plate special.
If you aren't in the mood for lunch or dinner, even if it's that time of day, Suzi's will cook up breakfast any old time.
The Country Combo is served with your choice of eggs, up to three of them, and country potatoes, bacon, sausage or ham. You can have a biscuit or white or wheat toast to complement the feast.
But it's the sweet stuff‹of course‹that makes the mouth water.
Big Fat Round Waffle with butter and syrup and a homemade fruit topping or a stack of Flap Jacks with a choice of meat, as well, make your sweet tooth satisfied for breakfast any time of day.
Suzi's even has a three-egg omelet with cheese and fried potatoes. Your choice of meat and bread rounds out this filling meal.
For our adventure at Suzi's, we varied in our selections.
The Sesame Chicken Salad was a great choice and a very filling meal. The salad is topped with mandarin oranges, fried noodles, chopped peanuts and sesame dressing. The ratio of greens to other ingredients was , hands-down, more of everything else. The dressing is served on the side and there's just enough of it to cover, but not cover up, the other flavors.
The pastry case at Suzi's Sweet Shoppe.
Pies, cakes, tortes and more! There's always something in the pastry case, and special orders are welcome, too. Suzi's Sweet Shoppe is happy to supply your function, whether large or small, with fresh-baked goodies.
Photos by Sunny Given
Chicken Little was juicy and tender, spicy, but not too much. Not a large sandwich, this one is a great choice if you've got your eye on one of Suzi's desserts.
Egg salad lovers will love the Humpty Dumpty. The sandwich comes with lettuce and tomato. All sandwiches are served with chips and a pickle.
For dessert, ice cream was the decadence of choice.
One scoop with hot caramel sauce was very good. Not too rich, not too filling, just-right sweet. Floats are another option. Want to be reminded of the good old days when the local drug store had the fountain in the back?
Try a Coke float with coffee ice cream. At Suzi's, it's as good as the good old days.
All ice creams are hand-dipped, including peanut butter fudge, wildberry safari, black raspberry, spumoni and the regulars, chocolate, vanilla and strawberry. Top them off with homemade peach, raspberry, blackberry, hot fudge or pineapple, or try caramel, Oreo, Heath Bar, marshmallows, sprinkles or assorted nuts.
The specialty bakery offers praline, vanilla or chocolate eclairs, cheesecakes, tortes, pies, cookies, wedding cakes, birthday cakes and specialty desserts, not to mention assorted breads and brownies.
Suzi's Sweet Shoppe not only has a way with food, it has a way with your attitude. A trip to Suzi's at the corner of Rt. 219 and Rt. 66 makes you happy all over. Just like you were a kid again.

Jerico Cabins

Authentic pre-Civil War cabins provide comfort and history

Gail Hyer

Pocahontas County Convention & Visitors Bureau
From the first time you enter one of the comfortable pre-Civil War Log cabins at the Jerico, you know you've have come to a special place. The windows sparkle like diamonds in the sunlight, the cozy fireplace is inviting and welcoming, and the private hot tub is warm and relaxing, just waiting for you to slip in. The beds are covered with soft, old quilts looks like company's coming!
Tom Moore, Jr., owner of the Jerico Bed/Breakfast & Pre-Civil War Log Cabins, and the Moore family, have operated the business over the past 15 years. Along with their friendly and eager staff, the Jerico awaits you to make your vacation an unforgettable memory.
Lindie, a four-year veteran to the Jerico, said there are visitors from all walks of life who come to vacation at the Jerico. Some of these guests include peeople who are interested in genealogy, television producers, business executives and Civil War Reenactors, along with those who just want to sit back and relax in one of the authentic pre-Civil War log cabins, or those who just want to enjoy the scenery of nature's mountain playground.
The Jerico offers pet lovers three pet-friendly cabins to choose from, including one which is horse-friendly. Five of the cabins have private hot tubs, with either a wood-or-gas-burning fireplace. For the romantic, one of the cabins has a red heart-shaped Jacuzzi with a gas fireplace.

Each of the seven log cabins has been standing since the mid-1800s. All have a history identified with the Civil War in Pocahontas County, and most of the cabins have been named after Civil War generals or Civil War history.
Bill Sharp, of Louisville, Kentucky, stays at the Jerico Cabins every chance he gets and that has been at least every year for the last five years.
"The Rebel's my favorite," said Sharp. "It's wonderful to be in the hot tub, watching the snow fall and seeing the deer among the trees. They treat me like family there, no matter what time of the year or day I show up."
The hand-hewn log cabins were built by early settlers in a time before West Virginia gained statehood. The uniformity of the logs, the exact notching of the corners, are a testimony to the woodsmen who cut and built these structures.
Chinking refers to the mixture used to fill the space between logs. The term comes from chunks of wood, called "chinks,"used to fill the gaps between logs. Mortar or clay daubing was applied over the wood chunks to seal the home from the elements. Daubing, a mixture of clay and straw or animal hair, served as a binder. Daubing often was replaced with mortar or covered with siding.

All of the cabins sit on a ridge at the southern outskirts of Marlinton, except one which is located off the Woodrow Road north of town.
The Patton Cabin was moved from a dairy farm in neighboring Greenbrier County. The cabin was named after Colonel George Smith Patton, grandfather of legendary WWII General, George Patton. Colonel Patton fought with the 22nd Virginia Cavalry at Droop Mountain, which is south of the cabin about 15 miles.
The Milroy Cabin was named after General Robert H. Milroy, a Union Commander in the 9th Indiana Volunteer Infantry Regiment who served at Cheat Summit Fort.
The Yank Cabin was built around 1850 and, during the Civil War, used as a bivouac and first aid station. It was originally located on Droop Mountain, which is the largest Civil War battleground in the state. Behind the Yank Cabin is the resting place for 16 Union soldiers.
The Rebel Cabin was at the foot of Droop Mountain, and was used as a first aid station by the Confederates on their retreat to Lewisburg. This cabin was built around 1850 and moved from Friar's Hill.
The Lewis Cabin, named after Andrew Lewis, who was the first to be garrisoned on the east side of the Allegheny Mountains in Marlinton. Lewis was the Commander-in-chief of the Southern Division Army of Lord Dunmore's war. He, along with 600 men, fought and won the battle of Point Pleasant against the Shawnee Indians.
The Bushwhacker Cabin was named for the Confederate guerrillas recruited by the South to ambush Union soldiers. This cabin was built at Mill Point by the Grimes family of Lobelia, around 1855. The cabin sits on four acres with apple trees that invite deer and bear to gather food and entertain the guests.

The Ruckman Cabin is the newest addition to the group of cabins. It was named after John W. Ruckman, who was commissioned Captain in the 127th Regiment of the 20th Brigade and 3rd Division of the Virginia Militia by Governor Henry A. Wise. On September 17, 1858, Ruckman was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel by Governor Henry A. Wise of Virginia. The cabin was moved from the Ruckman Homestead located in Mill Point to the Jerico Bed & Breakfast in 2004.
Each cabin is secluded in a cluster of trees making it quiet, with only the murmur of the nearby babbling stream. The Jerico cabins are tastefully decorated and impeccably clean. The natural hardwood floors with tongue and groove walls provide the perfect background for the attractive furnishings. "Attention to detail" is the decorating theme for these authentic cabins. Complete with linens, dishes, pots and pans, the cabins are good for a one-night stay or an indefinite period of time.
Jerico Log Cabins set a new standard of leisure, comfort and quality. Enjoy vacationing in immaculate log cabins as you reflect on the rich history of the Allegheny Mountains. The Jerico Cabins can be seen on the Web at http://www.jericobb.com ‡
