Two vie for county commission

Circuit Clerk Earl モButchヤ Michael is cagey about whether or not heメll seek the office heメs held since 1980.

Youメll have to be at the county clerkメs office by midnight Saturday to find out if Michael will file for reelection, Michael said.

If he isnメt, itメs not because the competition is so fierce. In fact, it appears no one wants his job.

Or the county clerkメs job, either, for that matter.

With just four days left for candidates to file, no one had filed Tuesday for either clerk position that earn salaries of more than $56,000 annually.

The open county commission seat in the central district now has two candidates, both of them Democrats.

Natasha McMann, of Marlinton, filed last week, so far the only candidate to join Amon Tracey on the ballot.

The board of education roster is up to one, as former teacher Norman Alderman has filed to run from the Southern District. Alderman was also once a technological coordinator for the board.

He was fired from his board office job in 2006 for insubordination, a charge he fought from grievance board to the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals. The high court ruled against him last year. Alderman also attempted to file criminal charges against either the board of education or its agents in December, but the Pocahontas County Grand Jury returned a no true bill.

Three seats on the board of education are open and no incumbent had filed as of Tuesday.

More people are interested in the executive committee positions.

Bill McMann, of Marlinton, has filed for both the county Democratic Executive Committee and the District Democratic Executive Committee.

Hillsboroメs Karen McCoy has filed for county Republican Exeuctive Committee.

In regional offices, Republican Joan Hinzman Sharp has filed for House of Delegates. Democrats Bill Hartman, the incumbent, and Denise Campbell have also filed. All three are from Randolph County.

State Senator Walt Helmick has filed for reelection to his seat in the 15th District. No one had filed to run against him Tuesday.

The filing period ends at midnight Saturday. County Clerk Sandra Friel said her office will be open up to the deadline.
