February marked by cold temps, lots of snow

Has everybody had enough already?

February was colder than normal with above average snowfall.

The average high temperature was 28.8 degrees and the average low temperature was 14.1 degrees. The mean of 21.4 degrees was 6.4 degrees below normal. That ranks near the top as the coldest February on record. In fact the coldest February on record was set in 2007 at 8.5 degrees below normal.

February was consistently cold all the way through. The coldest day was minus 4 on February 8. The warmest day was February 21 at 47 degrees. Minus 4 was also the coldest day in January and that should stand as the coldest this winter. All months since have been below average except for November.

Snowfall for February totaled 38.4 inches. That is my second largest monthly snowfall in 19 years of record keeping. February 2003 had 42.4 inches of wet and heavy snow that brought down trees, roofs and carports. The average snowfall for February is 15.4 inches. The winter snow total through February was 88.5 inches.

On February 12 for the first time ever, 49 states, Hawaii excluded, had snow on the ground.

Thereメs hope. March should be 15 degrees warmer than February.
