More candidates file for office

Saturday deadline looms

With less than a week to go before the deadline to file for elected office, relatively few candidates have put their names in the hat for six county offices and three board of education seats.

Since the political arena opened January 9, only 20 people have filed for county offices as of Tuesday.

For county commission, Southern District seat: Dolan Irvine, Democrat; Lloyd Arbogast, Republican

For prosecuting attorney: Robert "Bob" Martin and incumbent Donna Meadows Price, both Democrats

For assessor: Tom Lane and Leslie Cain, Democrats; Andrew "Andy" Friel and Scott Triplett, Republicans

For sheriff: Kenneth "Buster" Varner and Ben Wilfong, both Democrats; incumbent David Jonese and Stephen D. McCarty, Jr., Republicans

For magistrate: Incumbent Kathy Beverage, Democrat; Joel Srodes Cynthia Kelley, Rebecca Morris Rabel, all Republicans

For surveyor: Brian Lee Beverage, Democrat

For board of education: Kenneth Vance, Northern District, and Thomas VanReenen, Southern District, both incumbents

Cain resigned from the board Monday night, opening a Central District seat.

The top three vote-getters, depending on district, for board of education will take office July 1.

The top two will serve four-year terms, and the third will fill Cain's unexpired term.

No more than two members may serve from the same district. Jan McNeel, Southern District, and Emery Grimes, Northern District, are up for re-election in two years.
