Cass Scenic Railroad layoffs called off

Thirty seasonal employees at Cass Scenic Railroad were concerned they would receive layoff notices after rumors to that effect circulated through town last week.

Cass Superintendent Rob Sovine said the West Virginia Department of Natural Resourses is laying off seasonal employees at several state parks throughout the state, which included Cass at one point.

モAs of Tuesday, it was true that we were going to layoff 30 employees, but I received information today that funding was found to keep the employees on,ヤ Sovine said Wednesday.

Sovine said any employee who received a layoff notice could disregard it.

Cass Scenic Railroad became a state park in 1961 and tourist trains began running in 1963. The Bald Knob run was added in 1968. The railroad attracts and estimated 75,000 passengers and 100,000 visitors annually.

The railroad opens Memorial Day weekend on May 25 and closes Labor Day weekend on September 1. For more information on the train schedule, visit www.cassrailroad.com
