Hair-stylist Jan Skellion, of Buckeye, took the long way around to find her dream - two dreams to be exact.

In May, Skellion opened The Corner Salon in the spot that housed what was commonly known as Davis' Barbershop.
"I had always eyed this space," Skellion said.ﾠ "When I first saw it, I said to myself ﾑif that space ever comes available..."'
That space became available this year when barber Vicki Croston moved on to take up her shears at Lefty's Barbershop in Cass.

Although its name might suggest that it is a beauty salon for women only, that is not the case.ﾠ Skellion is also a barber.
"It's not your daddy's barbershop, but it is a barbershop, as well," Skellion said.

Skellion began her journey to Pocahontas County from Colorado in 1976.ﾠ From there she moved to Boston, Massachuetts and Florida, before finally settling down in the county in 1999.

"I've always loved horses," she said. "I got to have horses when I moved here.ﾠ It was a lifetime dream."

Skellion and her husband, Dave, first settled in the Green Bank area, where she boarded her first horse, Inka Bud, with Jay and Elizabeth Lockman.ﾠ And, as it turned out, Jay was making his first visit to The Corner Salon on Thursday when Skellion talked about her new shop.

She and Dave have lived in Buckeye for the past several years, where they have four horses.� The d�cor of the newly renovated salon has a decidedly equine theme, combining Skellion's two dreams.� A friend suggested that she should consider a name like "The Mane Street Salon" as yet another way to incorporate her dreams.

After 13 years at The House of Style, Skellion is now on her own, and as for her first few weeks "on the corner" - "Its' been awesome," she said. "It couldn't have been better."

The Corner Salon is open Monday through Friday, with the exception of Wednesday and Friday mornings.

Appointments can be made and walk-ins - men and women - are welcome as Skellion is happy to accommodate, if time allows.
