Brush fire on Brown's Mountain

Marlinton firefighters, led by Sergeant J.P. Duncan, climb up a steep Brown's Mountain slope to combat a brush fire on February 14. High winds stoked the fire but damp conditions helped contain it.

High winds blew down a power line and caused a brush fire Monday afternoon on the hillside above Route 39 west of the intersection with Brown's Mountain Road. Marlinton Fire and Rescue and Allegheny Power crews responded to the scene. After the power lines were secured, a group of firefighters, led by Sergeant J.P. Duncan, scrambled up the steep slope and knocked down the brush fire with rakes. Marlinton assistant fire chief Ken Hall said it was fortunate that the woods were still somewhat damp from melting snow or the gusty wind could have caused the fire to spread much faster. G.
