Scholarship established in memory of Loren Buzzard
This May, a senior at Pocahontas County High School who wants to study music or radio broadcasting will receive the first annual Loren Buzzard Memorial Scholarship. Loren, a member of the PCHS Class of 2008 who was a DJ at WVMR and a dedicated guitar player, died in an auto accident just a few weeks before graduation. The scholarship in his memory was established by a gift from his uncle, William モDaveヤ Buzzard, of New Castle Virginia.
There will be a benefit concert at the Pocahontas County Opera House Friday, April 16, to raise money for the scholarship fund.ᅠ Wyatt Turner and Jake Ryder, high school friends of Loren, will open the show with a country music set.ᅠ Next on the bill are Juanita Fireball and the Continental Drifters with high-energy old-time music. Patrick OメFlaherty, Jimmy Costa and Mary Dailey will play a mix of Irish and Appalachian music to close the show.
OメFlaherty, of the Irish Pub of Washington Street in Lewisburg, had appeared several times on Lorenメs radio show and came up with the idea of holding the benefit concert.
The event will start at 7 p.m. Tickets at the door are $7 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 12 and under.
Anyone who wants to make a donation to the fund should make checks payable to モPCHS-Loren Buzzard Memorial Scholarshipヤ and mail in care of Tom Sanders, PCHS, Rt. 1 Boxᅠ 133A, Dunmore WV 24934.
