PCHS underclassmen awarded for their achievements
Pocahontas County High School underclassmen were recognized for several academic achievements at awards day Thursday.
Art teacher Diane Nelson recognized students who placed first at the Evening with the Arts. They were: Merandia Shinaberry, Emily Dunz and Andy Myers.
English students who participated in the Young Writers Contest were recognized for their achievements. Clayton Irvine won the contest, and Alyssa Nottingham, Mackensie Halterman and Summer Chestnut participated.
Jamie Boothe won the Poetry Aloud competition, with Nathan Hamons coming in second.
Students who placed at Math Field Day were: first place, Clayton Irvine; second place, Gabriel Walkup; third place, Levi Hefner; and alternates, Cassie Chastain and Kurt Arbogast.
Jamie Boothe and Alex Griffith were selected to attend the Glenville State College/NASA Research Academy to be held at Glenville State College this summer.
Students participating in the National Skills USA Leadership Conference June 21 through 25 are Matt Jarrett, Morgan Langston and Jake Ryder.
Special education teacher Maria Busick and Wanda Hrabina recognized several students who placed at the county, regional and state social studies fairs. Ashley Hayes and her group placed first in U.S. History at the county level, first place at the regional level and second place at the state level.
Busick also recognized Ashley Hayes and Dan Hoover for completing their first year of Leadership Training.
Santana Beck and her partner received second place at the state social studies fair in Psychology. Autumn Ryder and Justin Cain placed third at the state fair in Local Studies and Drew Caloccia received honorable mention at the state fair in World History.
Students who participated in the state FBLA Leadership Conference were recognized for their achievements. They were: Cathy Hefner, Jamie Boothe, Karen Wilfong and Matt Alderman. Alderman will attend the National Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, this July.
Spanish teacher Mali Minter recognized students who placed on the National Spanish Exam. Jamie Boothe received the Bronce Award for placing first in Level 3; Clayton Irvine received the Plata Award for placing seventh in Level 2; Rebecca Cutlip received the Bronce Award for placing in the top 20 in Level 2; and Adam Fuller received the Premio Award for placing seventh in Level 2.
Minter also recognized students who were inducted into the Spanish National Honor Society: Ellie Bell, Chloe Bland, Jamie Boothe, Shonda Carr, Rachel Cain, Nathan Hamons, Seth Morgan, Danielle Mothes, Kim Pollard, Joe Rose, Aaron Sharp, Chelsea Walker, Erin White and Karen Wilfong.
At the Woodchoppers Festival in Webster Springs over Memorial Day weekend, Kyler Doss earned state honors in the West Virginia State Turkey Calling Contest and was named the West Virginia Junior State Champion Turkey Caller.
