FRN updates BOE on projects

Family Resource Network coordinator Laura Young updated the board of education Monday night on programs the FRN has worked on with the students of Pocahontas County.

Young explained the mission of the FRN and its goals for the children in the county.

モWe are a coordinating and facilitating agency that stands between low-income families and the service providers in Pocahontas County to try to make sure parents have what they need to educate, nurture and protect their children,ヤ she said. モI came today to go over some of the initiatives and projects we have worked on in Pocahontas County over the last three years that we have been partnered with the board of education.ヤ

Young was especially enthusiastic about the Camp Horseshoe program, a camp in Parsons for children from low-income families.

モTraditionally, Pocahontas County would get 20 scholarships for low-income kids to go to Camp Horseshoe,ヤ she said. モItメs a leadership and character building camp. Our children didnメt take advantage of that because they didnメt have transportation. This year, we had 20 kids that were able to attend the camp this summer because the BOE provided the bus and the fuel, and I wrote a grant through Snowshoe Foundation to pay the driver.ヤ

Other programs the FRN provides include Read Aloud, Backpack Attack, Rotary Interact Club, Warming Hands and Hearts and Men on the Move mentoring program.

Young invited the board to attend an Oral Health Summit October 21 at Mountain Quest. The summit will provide information on how the schools and the FRN can work together to educate students about the importance of oral health.

The board thanked Young for her dedication to the students and families of Pocahontas County and expressed its excitement for new programs she will pilot through the FRN.
