Board of education vice president Leslie Cain submitted her resignation at the board meeting Monday night. Cain resigned her seat because she plans to file to run for Pocahontas County assessor.

The board and Superintendent C.C. Lester reluctantly accepted her resignation and thanked her for her service to the school system.

Board president Kenneth Vance explained that the board has 45 days to fill the seat, which will be held by that person until July 1.

He said the ballot for the May election will now have three positions for the board of education. The two candidates with the most votes will serve a four-year term and the third candidate will serve a two-year term to finish Cainメs unexpired term.

Title I allocations depend on AYP status

Director of Federal Programs and Instruction Terrence Beam said he is at an impasse with the Title I funding due to state regulations on AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) of two Title I schools ヨ Green Bank Elementary-Middle School and Hillsboro Elementary School.

モThe law says if they do not make AYP two years in a row, they go on school improvement,ヤ Beam said. モIf a school is on school improvement, you have to offer school of choice. You have to give the parents the opportunity to send their students to another school in the county. We are required to do that and to provide the transportation.

モThe other things is, we have to take 20 percent of our Title I budget and allocate [it] toward professional development for those schools that do not make AYP,ヤ he continued. モWe are very hopeful that both schools make AYP but we have to plan our budgets as if they may not.ヤ

Beam said he is trying to plan ahead in case the two schools do not make AYP. He has asked all the principals to decide which Title I funded programs they would like to maintain. If the funding is allocated to support the two schools, several programs could suffer, including summer school, after-school programs and staff development activities.

The Westest results which determine AYP status will be released in August.
