Several schools suffer water leaks

Due to old equipment and vandalism, several schools recently suffered water breaks of varying degrees. Maintenance director Darin McKenney reported on the leaks at the May 29 board of education meeting.

The worst leak occurred at Marlinton Elementary School. McKenney said the town of Marlinton checks the water meter every two months and noticed a large use of water at the school.

モWe lost 400,000 gallons of water and luckily, I just happened to dig in the right spot behind the furnace area and found a cap that had a crack in it,ヤ he said. モThe bill was going to be $9,000 and I took it back over to the town to adjust it. They did take the sewer off, they couldnメt do anything about the water, so we got back down to about $5,000. Thatメs about $900 more than it normally is.ヤ

A leak at Pocahontas County High School led to the loss of 50,000 gallons. McKenney said it looked like someone threw a large piece of concrete down an open valve and broke the pipe.

A third leak was detected at Hillsboro Elementary School and was caused by old materials. McKenney said he replaced a valve and elbow in the pipe.

The board asked McKenney to see if the Town of Marlinton would check the schoolメs meter every month in order to detect leaks faster.
