Board of Education holds short meeting

The board of education held a brief meeting Monday night to discuss business and upcoming events.

Student representative Cassidy Rao gave an update on the students of Pocahontas County High School.

Rao reported that the senior class traveled to Davis & Elkins College September 21 for College Day.

“It definitely helped a lot of us out, kind of narrowing down where we wanted to go,” she said.

The junior class is preparing for Spirit Week, the theme of which is “Once a Warrior, Always a Warrior. Rao encourage board members to attend at least one day of Spirit Week to witness the spectacle and students having fun.

In sports, Rao said the fall teams have had several games and continue to fight for wins.

“Golf had regionals today in Clarksburg and the members that went are Andrew Morrison, Cody Sharp, Steven Mick and Parker White,” she said. “I’d like to recognize Andrew Morrison. He shot par in the Coalfield Conference. He’s a pretty good golfer from what I heard.”

As of Monday, the records were as follows: boys soccer,4-1-4; girls soccer, 6-4; volleyball, 1-2; and football, 1-3.

In financial management, the board approved the following:

• Payment of vendor listing of claims in the amount of $1,754.62.

• Payment of vendor listing of claims in the amount of $8,095.06.

• Purchase of a 2012 Chevrolet 2500HD, with four-wheel drive, automatic transmission, eight-foot bed, trailer brake controls, Reese Hitch, camper-style mirrors, six litre engine, 3.73 ratio rear end from Mitchell Chevrolet at a cost of $24,850.

In miscellaneous management, the board approved the following:

• Abolishment of 13 policies.

• Placement of the following policies on 30-day comment: GAD - County Professional Staff Development Council; GAK-R - Personnel Records; GBRIA-A/GBRIB/GBRIF - Personal Leave Policy; GBRIA/GBRIB/GBRIF - Personal Leave Bank Policy; GBRH - Leaves of Absence for Professional and Service Personnel; GBRHB-A - Professional Leave; GBRIH - Leave Donation Program; GBRIE - Caregiver Leave Bank; and GBRL - Drug-Free Workplace.

• Pocahontas County Parent Involvement Policy.

• Travel requests for September 24.

In personnel management, the board approved the following:

• Employment of Julie Brown, Shirlene Groseclose and Anne Smith as teachers for the after-school program at Green Bank Elementary-Middle School, effective October 1 to May 10, 2013, at $20 per hour, not to exceed 300 hour and $6,000, to be divided among the three individuals.

• Employment of Shannon Alderman, Shannon Anderson, Virginia Calhoun, Mary Dawson, Gina Hardesty, Samantha McClure and Laura Pritt as teachers for the after-school program at Hillsboro Elementary School, effective October 1 to May 10, 2013, at $20 per hour, not to exceed 150 hours and $3,000, to be divided among the seven individuals.

• Requested transfer of Frank Barrett, Jr., from custodian II at Pocahontas County High School to custodian III at Marlinton Elementary School, effective retroactively to August 15, for the remainder of the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Shift: 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

• Employment of Diane Delfino and Elisa Jamey Weber as teachers for the after-school program at Marlinton Elementary School, effective October 1 to May 10, 2013, at $20 per hour, not to exceed 150 hours and $3,000, to be divided among the two individuals.

• Requested transfer of Roy C. Shearer from custodian III at Marlinton Elementary School to custodian II at Marlinton Middle School, effective September 26 for the remainder of the 2012-2013 fiscal year. Shift: 2 p.m. to 10 p.m.

• Employment of Sharla Sherman as librarian/media specialist, half-time, at Marlinton Middle School, effective September 26 for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year. Term of employment is 179 half days.

• Employment of Patricia Juergens as teacher of Spanish, half-time, effective for the second semester of the 2012-2013 school year. Term of employment is 100 days. Position to be abolished at the end of the 2012-2013 school year.

• Change in classification of the following from custodian II to custodian III, effective for the 2012-2013 fiscal year: Roy C. Shearer, Caleb J. Barkley, Cindy Wade-Price, Tina L. Jackson and Valerie H. Lambert.

• Employment of Cammie J. Wade as itinerant special education classroom aide/bus aide for Marlinton Middle School, effective September 26 for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year. Term of employment is 179 days. Shift: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Wade will board and exit the bus at Huntersville.

• Employment of Lesa A. Allen as itinerant special education classroom aide/bus aide for Marlinton Middle School effective September 26 for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year. Term of employment is 179 days. Shift: 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

• Employment of Timothy W. VanReenen as substitute teacher for Pocahontas County Schools, as needed, effective September 26 for the remainder of the 2012-2013 school year.

The board will hold a public forum at Green Bank Elementary-Middle School Monday, October 1, at 6 p.m. prior to the Local School Improvement Council (LSIC) meeting at 7 p.m.

The next regular board meeting will be Monday, October 8 at 7 p.m. in the board of education conference room.
