Local fire department teaches fire safety to GBEMS students
As part of Fire Prevention Week, members of the Bartow-Frank-Durbin Volunteer Fire Department visited Green Bank Elementary-Middle School Friday to teach the students about fire safety.
Students in kindergarten through fifth grade learned what precautions they can take at home in the event of a fire, as well as about the equipment firefighters and EMTs use.
BFD Fire Chief Buster Varner said it is important for children to know local firefighters and be familiar with them.
“We want to talk to them and show them our gear so they aren’t scared of us,” Varner said. “I love doing this kind of thing, working with the kids.”
BFD members Mike Vance, Jessica Varner, Mike Carpenter and Danny Lambert gave tours of the fire trucks and ambulance and exhibited equipment firefighters use.
