BFD takes third place in WV Stars of Life

Four members of the Bartow-Frank-Durbin fire department attended the annual ESCAPe conference at Pipestem State Park February 21 through 28 and returned home with third place from the WV Stars of Life competition.

The competition is a Jeopardy-style game with teams of three competing. The BFD team consisted of Buster Varner, Helen Clark and John Ford. Jessica Varner also attended the conference.

Varner explained that, in past years, the game had multiple choice questions and the team could work together. This year, the members took turns answering questions and could not rely on each other for help.

The BFD team, dubbed The Durbin Delinquents, have placed in the top eight for the past nine years and is the only all BLS (Basic Life Support) team to compete. Varner said other teams had members that are paramedics and registered nurses.

The first place winner will compete in the National Stars of Life competition in Missouri.

ESCAPe is a training conference for emergency medical service members for the state of West Virginia. The week long event hosts guest speakers, classes and a banquet.
