French's Diner first opened its doors in the spring of 1950, and owner French Johnson ran the diner for around seven years before he passed away. Over time, the diner changed hands a few times, but it was Arlene and Larry Armstrong, and their daughter, Tanya, who ran French's for 12 years.

A former county commissioner was arrested last Wednesday on Marlinton's Main Street. Because he fell from the deputy's vehicle, Norman Alderman was also transported to Pocahontas Memorial Hospital. Alderman was on the pavement between the deputy's SUV and the curb for about 10 minutes.

After receiving an $85,000 grant, Pocahontas County High School will dust off the welding equipment and reopen the welding program next semester. The program ended in 2008 due to budget cuts, and principal Tom Sanders said he has tried since then to find money to fund the program.
