Warrior Soccer 4-1-1?run earns #15 ranking

James Monroe (0-7-0)..........................2

The #14 Warriors traveled to Class AA James Monroe on September 15 and scored 10 goals and had 33 shots-on-goal, both the most this season. The 10-2 win, the second over the Mavericks this season. Scoring for PCHS were: senior captain Curtis Pyles - two goals of six shots, senior captain Bill Kelley - one of six, junior Tyler Davis - three of six, junior Parker White - zero of two, junior Ethan Pugh - one of two, sophomore Garrett McCurdy - zero of one, sophomore James Coy - two of six, freshman Stephan Simmons - zero of one, junior Levi Hefner - one of two, freshman Phillip Green zero of three and freshman Brandon Cassell - zero of one.

The Warriors led in corner kicks 5-1 and in direct kicks 4-1. Getting assists for PCHS were Pyles and Coy with two each and Kelley and Simmons with one each. PCHS scored four goals in the first half and six in the second. Senior goalie Matthew Alderman had but one keeper save.

#16 Bluefield (3-4-1)............................1


The #18 Warriors traveled to Class AA #16 Bluefield on September 17 and played to a 1-1 tie on an overcast afternoon. Bluefield's Nicholas Delida scored the only goal of the first half with a long shot that found our keeper out of the goal and chipped over for the 1-0 lead. Pyles scored the only goal of the second half on a penalty kick with 34:00 to go in the match to tie the game at 1-1.

Bluefield outshot PCHS 10 to 5 in the first half, and the Warriors outshot the Beavers 11-to-3 in the second. PCHS had seven keeper saves to four for Bluefield. Both teams had three corner kicks and five direct kicks each. The Beavers got the edge on indirect kicks, three-to-one. Shots on goal for PCHS were: Pyles - five, White - three, McCurdy - three, Davis - one, Coy -one and Green - one.

Nicholas County (1-6-2)...........................3

The #18 Warriors traveled to Class AAA Nicholas County on September 2O. PCHS took control early and led 5-0 at the half. The second half was closer with PCHS outscoring Nicholas 4-3 for the final 9-3 score. Coach Kathy White commented that the fast PCHS boys were even faster on the artificial turf at Summersville.

McCurdy scored two goals, and Kelley, Pyles, Davis, White, Hefner and Cassell each scored one. Davis led the 18-shot attack with four followed by Pyles with three. Kelley, Davis, White and Hefner each had one assist in the win. NCHS led on corner kicks 5-4, and PCHS led on direct kicks 4-1. Alderman had six keeper saves.

#11 Liberty Harrison (7-4-1)...............2

Last year Class AA Liberty Harrison surprised PCHS at Dunmore in the last match of the season with an 8-0 shutout, the Warriors' worst defeat of 2010. The Warriors traveled to #11 Class AA Liberty on September 22.

Liberty would score only once each half for the 2-0 shutout at the 17:17 and 29:27 marks. White led the charge for PCHS with six of the 18 Warrior shots-on-goal followed by German exchange student Georg Faerber in his first game for PCHS, with three. Alderman had 11 keeper saves. Corner kicks went 8-6 in Liberty's favor, and direct kicks went 5-2 for PCHS.

Kings Academy (9-1-0).........................1

The PCHS Boys came from behind in the second half and knocked the Kings Way Christian Academy soccer team of Charleston from its 9-0 unbeaten ranks on September 24 at PCHS. The private school's K-12 enrollment is listed as only 23 students on various websites, and Academy is not an SSAC member

Dre Fourie would score the first goal of the match with a short shot in a crowd at the 1:46 mark to take the 1-0 lead for the visitors. Faerber, the tallest player on the field, in his second game Saturday for PCHS got his first Warrior goal on a direct kick with 46 seconds to go in the first half. The powerful shot from 35 yards out hit the underside of the cross bar and into the upper net to tie the match at 1-1. With 12:55 to go in the match, PCHS would get several chances on rebounded balls before Hefner would score his sixth goal of the season with an assist from Coy for the 2-1 lead that would hold for the remainder of the tough match.

Before the match concluded Academy's two best players, brothers Juan and Brian Calix, who played a few years back at James Monroe, would get red and yellow cards respectively for shoving Pugh and for questioning the calls of the referee.
Leading the way for PCHS on shots-on-goal were Pyles and White with three shots each of the team's 13 shots (Davis -2, Faerber - 2, Kelley - 1, McCurdy - 1 and Hefner - 1). PCHS keeper Alderman had a great game with five keeper saves. PCHS had advantages in corner kicks 10-3, direct kicks 4-2 and indirect kicks 2-0.

Pendleton County (2-6-2)......................0

The newly # 15 (from #21 with points for win over Kings Academy) Warriors traveled to Franklin on September 26 for the first of two matchups this season with Pendleton County and their only Class A SSAC opponent this season. Pocahontas lost 2-3 at Pendleton last year and won 2-1 at Dunmore.

Faerber would score on his second of six shots-on-goal in the game at the 25 minute mark of the first half to take the 1-0 lead that held until into the second half. White dribbled down the field through the Wildcats' defense and scored a goal with 15 minutes to go in the match for the final 2-0 score.

PCHS had 18 shots-on-goal, eight keeper saves, one-to-three on corner kicks and three-to-three on direct kicks. The Wildcats got the only indirect kick. Pocahontas improves to (6-5-3) with the win, and Pendleton drops to (2-6-2) with the loss.

The Warriors will be at home when they play Nicholas County for the second time this season on Thursday, October 6, at 7 p.m., following the girls game.
