Junior Warriors shut out Timberwolves

The Pocahontas County Jr. High Warriors traveled to Western Greenbrier Middle School last Thursday to take on the Timberwolves, and came away with a 30-0 victory.

The Warrior defense came up with the game’s first big play when on their second series, they forced the Wolves into a punting situation. The punter bobbled the snap and Brady Jones, Drake Warder and Jacob Walton were there for the tackle. The Warrior offense then started taking over by opening up holes for their running backs. Morgan Mason took advantage and ripped off runs of 20 and 16 yards to get the ball to the six yard line. He then finished it off with the touchdown and the two-point conversion to make the score 8-0.

The Wolves tested the Warrior defense by driving the ball down to the Warriors’ 28 yard line to start the second quarter. The defense then stiffened and came up with a stop on fourth down. The Warriors scored on the next series with the big play coming when Mason took the pitch, cut across the field and took the ball 63 yards to set up the offense with a first and goal at the one yard line. Wyatt Workman then finished it off with a quarterback sneak to make the score 14-0. The conversion was no good. And that ended the first half.

The Warriors received the second half kick-off and wasted little time in maximizing their opportunity. The offense took to the air when Workman dropped back and hit Jones with a 28 yard pass. Then on third down, Workman again dropped back to pass. This time he fired the ball to Ryan Irvine, who had gotten behind the defense, for a 42 yard touchdown pass. Workman connected with Jones again for the conversion to make the score 22-0 at 6:17 in the third quarter. The Wolves offense controlled the ball for the remainder of the quarter as they drove to the Warriors’ 30 yard line.

The Warrior defense again stepped up to start the fourth stanza and made a stop on fourth down. Irvine then carried the ball 31 yards to the opponent’s 29 yard line. After a fourth down pass from Workman to Mason moved the ball to the 12, Irvine took the ball the rest of the way for the score. On the two-point attempt, Workman zipped the pass to Irvine to complete the scoring, 30-0.

Mason finished the game with 132 yards on 10 carries. Workman completed five of seven passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Irvine carried four times for 47 yards and a touchdown. He also caught a 42 yard TD pass. Jones caught a pass for 28 yards and also scored a two-point conversion. He also had six tackles, with two from his defensive end position behind the line of scrimmage. Jesse McCarty did an excellent job filling in at center for Justin Hendrick who was out. He also thrived on defense, making 13 tackles. Keith Harrah also had six tackles.

The Warriors next game is on the road at Richwood on September 27 at 6 p.m.
