Junior Warriors end season undefeated
The Pocahontas County Junior High football team played Summersville Middle School last Wednesday evening, supported by a large crowd at the Pocahontas County High School field. The Warriors were attempting to keep their undefeated season intact and they did just that with a 52-20 victory.
The home team scored first when Wyatt Workman hit Ryan Irvine on a 44–yard pass play for the touchdown. Morgan Mason ran in the two point conversion to make the score 8-0. The Warrior defense then caused a fumble on the next Bears’ possession and Keith Harrah recovered. On the first play after the turnover, Workman took the ball 31 yards to the end zone to make the score 14-0. Mason again scored the conversion and it was 16-0 at the 3:40 mark of the first quarter. The Warrior defense again proved opportunistic on the next series, as Workman intercepted a pass and returned it 45 yards, all the way to the Bears’ 16-yard line. The Warriors were quick to capitalize as Workman found Brady Jones on a 16–yard touchdown pass in which he carried two Bears into the end zone for the score. Mason ran in the conversion and the first quarter score was 24-0, even before the Nicholas County school bus had cooled down.
The Bears opened the second quarter with a long pass down to the Warrior 6 – yard line. They then scored on a quarterback run to make the score 24-6. The conversion was no good. The rest of the quarter was all defense, until late in the period. With 43 seconds on the clock until halftime, Workman again found a wide open Jones, who hauled in the 40–yard touchdown pass. Conversion good by Mason and the halftime score was 32-6.
Midway in the third quarter, Danny Kimble and Jesse McCarty teamed up on a tackle that caused a fumble and Justin Hendrick recovered for the Warriors. After a penalty backed the Warriors up to their own 23–yard line, Mason took the hand-off and blew past the defense on his way for a 77–yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good and the score was 38-6. After the defense caused the Bears to turn the ball over on downs on their next possession, the Warriors had the ball on the Summersville 48–yard line. On third down, Workman took off for a 32–yard touchdown run. Mason got the conversion and the score at the end of the third quarter was 46-6.
The JV teams finished the contest and got in on the scoring also. The Bears managed two touchdowns and Michael Morrison scored on a 65–yard touchdown run. The final score was 52-20.
The win capped off a perfect 8-0 season for the Warriors. The Warrior defense was led by Harrah – 7 tackles, McCarty – 6 tackles, Hendrick – 5 tackles, Drake Warder – 5 tackles and Logan Davis and Jones with 4 each.
The offense was led by Workman who finished with four of seven passing for 111 yards and three touchdowns. Two went to Jones and one to Irvine. He also had 68 yards and two touchdowns on four carries. Mason finished with 100 yards rushing on nine carries and one touchdown. He also scored five two–point conversions.
